BIO
Tara Holmes is a lens-based artist and educator based in New York. She holds an MFA and MA in Photography and a BS in Sociology from the University at Albany. Her practice intersects spatial, technological, and behavioral actions, exploring how digital systems shape human attention, gesture, and perception. Using photography, video, and sound, Holmes transforms fleeting screen-based imagery into tangible forms, disrupting passive consumption and inviting critical reflection. Her research frames the body as a territorial lens through which to understand technological conditioning and its subtle influence on human behavior.
Artist Statement
I am an artist working in lens-based media, driven by my interest in the human body, technological devices, and behavioral responses. My work is centered around the increasing dynamics of our relationship with technology. Through photography, sound, and video, I dissect and filter behavioral nuances, investigating how the screen permeates beyond mere images and entertainment. Often utilizing found imagery, I mimic and employ digital manipulation to unveil the behavioral and physical conditioning being orchestrated by proprietary entities. By enlarging the works beyond conventional consumption, I release these temporal images from the screen, giving them a place of permanence. The resulting works are simultaneously familiar and enigmatic, inviting contemplation of dystopia and humanity’s evolving connection to the physical world.
